Understanding Pregnancy Weight Gain:
Appropriate weight gain during pregnancy is crucial for the health of both mother and baby. The recommendations vary based on your pre-pregnancy Body Mass Index (BMI) and whether you are carrying a single baby or twins.
BMI Categories:
- Underweight: BMI < 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI 18.5 – 24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25.0 – 29.9
- Obese: BMI ≥ 30.0
In the first trimester (weeks 1-13), weight gain is usually minimal, often around 1-4 lbs. Most of the weight gain occurs in the second and third trimesters. The “Gain by Current Week” estimate accounts for this general pattern.
These are general guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Always discuss your individual weight gain goals and concerns with your healthcare provider.
